Weekly Attendance: 150 (*Pre-COVID, now some are online)
Union Baptist Church (UBC) is a multi-generational historic church with a long legacy of ministry in Gloucester Virginia. The church was the result of a preaching ministry in Gloucester that started in 1775 and resulted in Union’s founding along with another church in 1801. Over two centuries God has used Union to start 4 different churches in the area: First Morning Star Baptist Church, Providence Baptist Church, Gloucester Point Baptist Church, and White Marsh Baptist Church. The church remains an important landmark in the community and is one of the largest church facilities in the Peninsula. We are the starting point for the Guinea Jubilee parade and a well-attended fall fest. We also support the adjacent Achilles Elementary School with our kids snack pack program and have a very active food ministry for those in need. We have ample room for growth and opportunities all around us.
The church has been through many seasons in its long life. It once had a membership of 900 people in the late 1940s and for many years after averaged 400-500 people. Over the past decade numbers declined to around 130 average Sunday attendance.
Union is now entering a new season with a young new pastor, Jared Berry, who came onboard in the beginning of November 2019. Attendance is slowly coming back up with a current weekly attendance of about 150 and new baptisms. Jared has a vision for 2020 as a year of “Preparing the Way for the Lord” to move and reach new people. This involves preparing spiritually, physically, organizationally, and in discipleship. By making the church more welcoming to young families, better unified in our focus, and renewed spiritually; Union is becoming ready to reach future generations with the Gospel. It’s a new season for the church and an exciting one. We need a minister of music who has the patience and vision to accomplish a kingdom work that will take years, not months.

What life is like in Hayes, Virginia:
Our church is tucked away in southeastern Gloucester County at the head of a small, quiet peninsula which is home to those who have worked the land and surrounding waters for generations, as well as those who have made their homes here to enjoy the rural life. Our small portion of the County boasts an elementary school, a marina, a convenience store, several seafood businesses, and it is the epitome of our County slogan, “The Land of the Life Worth Living.”
Our county is diverse and has been growing rapidly in population and services over the last 20 years. Just a handful of miles up the road from our Church are modern subdivisions, town houses, shopping centers, a hospital, medical offices, a private campground, public parks and boat ramps, a public beach, public and private schools, a community college, and the Virginia Institute of Marine Science of the College of William and Mary. Also in our County are many produce stands offering locally sourced produce and seafood, along with major supermarkets and a Super Wal-Mart. We even have Starbucks!
Driving around here you might see watermen in their workboats harvesting crabs, oysters, clams, or fish; or you might see farmers planting spring crops using state of the art technology or harvesting in the fall using huge combines. You might come across soccer and baseball diamonds with children at play, or you might see the High School crew team out rowing in the early morning. Driving out of Gloucester on U.S. Route 17, the main thoroughfare through Gloucester, you might find yourself stopped on the George P. Coleman Bridge to allow a Navy ship or submarine to dock at one of the Naval Installations up the river. You might also see Coast Guard vessels, barges, sailboats, jet skis, more workboats, and all manner of pleasure craft on the water, too. Continuing across the bridge to Yorktown, you have endless possibilities for recreation, shopping, and visiting historic venues, all within a 5 to 40 minute drive. Historic Yorktown and its battlefields and Visitor Center, the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown, the Jamestown Festival Park, Colonial Williamsburg, Busch Gardens Williamsburg, Water Country USA, the Army Transportation Museum at Fort Eustis, the Mariners Museum in Newport News, the Air and Space Museum in Hampton, NASA/Langley in Hampton, just to name a few.
Right here in Gloucester County we have a Daffodil Festival every Spring to celebrate the flower that was once grown extensively here for export to Northern Markets, and we are home to Brent and Becky’s bulbs, a world wide grower and shipper of daffodils and other blooming beauties. In the summer there are numerous fishing tournaments, and in the Fall the Guinea Jubilee, a family friendly, community wide festival celebrating the lifestyle of our own tiny peninsula takes place. Its motto is “Honoring our Past, Celebrating our Future.”
